San Blas Islands
Caribbean Paradise in the Guna Yala Comarca
The San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) are an archipelago of over 360 islands off Panama's Caribbean coast — one of the last truly unspoiled Caribbean destinations. The islands belong to the Guna Yala comarca, an autonomous indigenous territory governed entirely by the Guna people under their own laws and leadership. This self-governance means the islands remain uncommercial, undeveloped, and breathtakingly pristine.
Your day begins early with a 4x4 drive from Panama City, climbing through jungle-covered mountains before descending to the Caribbean coast — a scenic adventure that takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on conditions. The road is unpaved for the final stretch, winding through dense rainforest before opening up to the coast. At the port, you'll board a motorboat for the ride out to the islands.
The islands themselves are postcard-perfect: powder-white sand, palm trees, and water so clear you can see the bottom from 20 feet up. You'll spend the day island-hopping between several cays, with time to snorkel over vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, swim in impossibly turquoise water, and simply relax on beaches that feel like they belong to you alone.
The Guna people are warm and welcoming hosts. Their culture is rich and distinctive — the women are known for their colorful mola textile art, intricate reverse-applique panels that are both wearable art and a UNESCO-recognized cultural tradition. You'll have the opportunity to meet Guna artisans and purchase molas and other handcrafted souvenirs directly.
A fresh seafood lunch is prepared by the Guna community on one of the islands — typically grilled fish, coconut rice, and plantains. Go Beyond provides kosher snack options and coordinates dietary needs well in advance so you're set for the full day. The return drive brings you back to Panama City by early evening.
