Discover Panama
Panama is a country of remarkable contrasts -- a modern skyline alongside colonial architecture, tropical rainforests bordering pristine beaches, and indigenous cultures thriving alongside cosmopolitan city life. Whether you're visiting for a few days or a few weeks, Panama offers experiences that will stay with you forever.
The country's central location makes it a natural crossroads of the Americas, and its famous canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Beyond the canal, you'll discover vibrant markets, world-class birdwatching, incredible marine life, and some of the friendliest people in the world.
Panama's thriving Jewish community of approximately 15,000 is one of the most welcoming in Latin America, with intermarriage rates among the lowest in the Diaspora and 98% of Jewish children attending day schools. Multiple synagogues, community centers, and over 80 kosher establishments make Panama one of the most accessible destinations for observant travelers anywhere in the world.

Travel Guide
Essential information for planning your Panama visit
Panama has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. Understanding the weather patterns will help you plan the best time for your visit.
Dry Season (December - April)
The dry season is the most popular time to visit Panama. Expect sunny skies, warm temperatures averaging 85-90°F (29-32°C), and very little rainfall. This is peak tourist season, so booking in advance is recommended.
Rainy Season (May - November)
The rainy season brings afternoon showers, typically lasting 1-2 hours. Mornings are usually clear and sunny, making it still a great time to visit. Temperatures remain warm, and you'll find fewer crowds and better rates on accommodations.
Regional Variations
The Pacific coast (Panama City side) tends to be drier than the Caribbean coast. Highland areas like Boquete and El Valle offer cooler temperatures year-round, averaging 65-75°F (18-24°C). The rainforest regions experience more consistent rainfall throughout the year.
Historic Sites
- Casco Viejo -- Panama's charming colonial quarter and UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring cobblestone streets, restored architecture, boutique hotels, and rooftop restaurants.
- Panama Canal Museum -- Located in Casco Viejo, this museum tells the incredible story of the canal's construction through interactive exhibits and historical artifacts.
- Miraflores Locks Visitor Center -- Watch massive ships pass through the canal locks from the observation deck. The center includes a museum, theater, and restaurant with canal views. See our Panama Canal Tour.
Natural Wonders
- Soberania National Park -- A tropical rainforest just 25 minutes from downtown, home to over 500 bird species, sloths, monkeys, and the famous Pipeline Road for birdwatching.
- Amador Causeway -- A scenic path connecting four islands at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, perfect for walking, cycling, and enjoying ocean views.
Beaches
- Contadora Island -- A pristine island in the Pearl Islands archipelago, just a 20-minute flight from Panama City, featuring crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches.
- Taboga Island -- Known as the "Island of Flowers," this charming island is a short ferry ride from the Amador Causeway and offers beautiful beaches and hiking trails.
Clothing
- Lightweight, breathable clothing (cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics)
- A light rain jacket or compact umbrella -- essential year-round
- Comfortable walking shoes for city exploration and tours
- Water shoes or sandals with grip for boat tours and beach excursions
- A light sweater or cardigan for air-conditioned restaurants and malls
- Modest swimwear and cover-ups
Essentials
- High-SPF sunscreen (the tropical sun is intense)
- Insect repellent, especially for rainforest and jungle tours
- A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
- Hat and sunglasses for sun protection
- Any prescription medications you need (pharmacies are available but may not carry specific brands)
Tips
- Panama uses the US Dollar (Balboa), so no currency exchange is needed for Americans
- Electrical outlets are the same as the US (Type A/B, 110V)
- Pack a small daypack for tours -- you'll want hands free for cameras and water
- Bring a waterproof phone case for boat tours and rainy-season visits
Within Panama City
Uber and DiDi are widely used and affordable in Panama City. Taxis are also plentiful, though it's best to confirm the fare before getting in. The city's traffic can be heavy during rush hours, so plan accordingly for morning and late afternoon travel.

- Gamboa / Embera Village -- 45 minutes from downtown, along the canal
- Coronado Beach -- 1.5 hours west on the Pan-American Highway

Short domestic flights connect Panama City to David (gateway to Boquete), Bocas del Toro, and other regional destinations. Charter flights to San Blas are available and save significant travel time compared to the overland route. The domestic terminal at Albrook Airport is just 15 minutes from the city center.
Panama City has a surprising amount to keep kids entertained. Here are some popular family-friendly attractions beyond the tours:
