Contadora Island Day Trip
A Pearl Islands Escape, About 1.5 Hours by Ferry from Panama City
Contadora Island is the most accessible island in the Pearl Islands archipelago — a chain of over 200 islands and islets in the Gulf of Panama, about 70 kilometers from the coast. The name "Contadora" means "counting house" in Spanish — this is where the Spanish conquistadors sorted and counted the pearls harvested from the surrounding waters before shipping them to Spain. The Pearl Islands are also where the TV show Survivor filmed multiple seasons.
The day begins with a 1.5-hour ferry ride from Panama City out across the Gulf of Panama to Contadora. The crossing is scenic — you'll watch the city skyline recede behind you and the islands of the archipelago emerge from the Pacific. Dolphins and sea birds are commonly spotted along the way, and during whale season (July–October) humpback whales are sometimes seen from the boat.
Contadora is small — just 1.2 square kilometers — but it packs in 13 beaches, each with its own character. Playa Larga is the longest stretch of white sand, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Playa de las Suecas is more secluded, tucked between rocky headlands. Playa Cacique offers calm, shallow waters ideal for families. You can walk between most beaches in 10-15 minutes along shaded paths.
The snorkeling around Contadora is excellent. The waters are home to sea turtles, rays, tropical fish, and during the right season, whale sharks. The coral formations off the northern beaches are particularly rich. For those who prefer to stay dry, glass-bottom boat tours are also available on the island.
From July through October, humpback whales migrate through the Pearl Islands on their way from Antarctica to warmer breeding waters. Whale watching boat trips depart directly from Contadora, and sightings during peak season are almost guaranteed — breaching, tail slaps, and mothers with calves are common. It's one of the best whale watching experiences in Central America.
The island has a handful of small restaurants and beach bars, but Go Beyond coordinates kosher provisions for the day so you can enjoy the beaches without worrying about food. The return ferry departs in the late afternoon, getting you back to Panama City by early evening.
