Bocas del Toro

Panama's Caribbean island paradise

Caribbean Island Living

Bocas del Toro is an archipelago of nine main islands and hundreds of smaller islets off Panama's northwestern Caribbean coast. With crystal-clear turquoise water, pristine coral reefs, lush rainforest, and a laid-back Caribbean atmosphere, it's the perfect contrast to the energy of Panama City.

The main town—Bocas Town on Isla Colon—is a colorful hub of wooden Caribbean architecture built over the water, with restaurants, bars, and dive shops lining the waterfront. From here, water taxis shuttle visitors to surrounding islands and beaches.

Getting There

  • By air: 1-hour flight from Panama City (Albrook) to Bocas del Toro (BOC). Air Panama operates daily flights
  • By land + boat: 10+ hours by bus/car to Almirante, then a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. Not recommended for short trips

Best for 2–3 Days

We recommend spending at least 2 nights in Bocas del Toro to fully enjoy the islands. A 3-night stay allows for a more relaxed pace with time for island hopping, snorkeling, and beach days.

Top Beaches

Red Frog Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in Central America, located on Isla Bastimentos. Named after the tiny red poison dart frogs found in the surrounding rainforest (harmless to observe). Wide stretch of golden sand with powerful waves for surfing and calmer areas for swimming. Reach it by water taxi + short trail walk.

Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella)

A calm, shallow Caribbean beach famous for the large orange starfish visible in the crystal-clear water. Perfect for families with young children thanks to gentle waves and shallow depth. Located on the north side of Isla Colon, accessible by water taxi or taxi + short walk.

Zapatilla Islands

Two uninhabited islands within Bastimentos National Marine Park. Pristine white sand, incredible snorkeling, and sea turtle nesting grounds. The ultimate castaway experience—bring your own supplies as there are no facilities.

Wizard Beach

A secluded beach on Isla Bastimentos, reached by a 30-minute jungle trail from Old Bank village. Fewer visitors than Red Frog Beach, with consistent surf and a wild, natural feel.
