El Valle de Anton
A Mountain Village Inside a Volcanic Crater
El Valle de Anton is one of Panama's most beloved day trips — a charming mountain town nestled inside the caldera of an extinct volcano, about two hours west of Panama City. At 600 meters above sea level, the air is noticeably cooler (averaging 65–75°F), the vegetation is lush and green, and the pace of life slows to a welcome crawl. The drive itself is scenic, winding through rolling countryside and small Panamanian towns before descending into the crater.
The centerpiece is Chorro El Macho, a 35-meter waterfall surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. A short trail leads to the base where you can feel the spray and, if conditions allow, take a refreshing dip in the natural pool below. The area also features a canopy zipline for those seeking an extra thrill. Nearby, the butterfly sanctuary (Mariposario) houses dozens of native species in a lush enclosed garden — a hit with families and nature photographers alike.
El Valle's natural thermal hot springs are fed by geothermal activity beneath the crater floor. The mineral-rich pools range from warm to hot and are a perfect way to relax after a morning of hiking. Some pools feature volcanic mud said to have skin-rejuvenating properties — locals and visitors alike swear by it.
The town's artisan market is a local institution. Vendors sell fresh produce, exotic orchids, handmade crafts, soapstone carvings, and Panama's famous golden frog figurines. It's the best place in Panama to buy authentic handicrafts directly from artisans. The market is largest on Sundays, but we recommend visiting on a weekday — the highway to El Valle gets extremely congested on Sundays, adding significant time to the drive. On weekdays you'll still find vendors and enjoy a more relaxed experience. Nearby, the El Nispero Zoo and Botanical Garden houses Panama's critically endangered golden frog — a bright yellow national symbol that no longer exists in the wild, making this one of the only places in the world to see it.
