Fishing in Panama

World-class fishing from freshwater lakes to deep ocean

Panama is one of the world's great fishing destinations. The country sits at the crossroads of two oceans with a man-made freshwater lake at its center, giving you access to an extraordinary range of species — from peacock bass in the rainforest to marlin in the deep Pacific — all within day-trip distance of Panama City.

Whether you're after a relaxed morning on a jungle lake or a full day chasing marlin offshore, we'll pair you with the right boat and captain. Kosher meals are packed and ready, and a Go Beyond guide can join your group for the day.

Lake Gatun — Freshwater

Gatun Lake is the massive man-made lake at the heart of the Panama Canal, surrounded by dense tropical rainforest. It's Panama's top freshwater fishing destination and just one hour from the city.

  • Species: Peacock bass, tarpon, snook
  • Duration: Half-day (6h) or full-day (9h)
  • Departs: Gamboa Marina
  • Best for: All skill levels, families
  • Season: Year-round
  • Group size: 2–5 anglers per boat

Most charters include all equipment, bait, a bilingual guide, and refreshments. You'll fish among forested islands while cargo ships transit the canal in the background — a surreal combination.

Taboga & Panama Bay — Inshore

The waters around Taboga Island and Panama Bay offer excellent inshore fishing just 30–45 minutes from the Amador Causeway. Several operators combine 2–3 hours of fishing with beach time on Taboga — a great option for groups that include non-anglers.

  • Species: Sierra mackerel, jacks, snapper, corvina, barracuda
  • Duration: Half-day (4–6h)
  • Departs: Amador Causeway / Flamenco Marina
  • Best for: Casual anglers, families, fishing + beach combo
  • Season: Year-round
  • Group size: 2–8 per boat

Pearl Islands — Deep Sea

The Pearl Islands archipelago (Contadora and surrounding waters) is where serious sport fishing happens. The nutrient-rich waters attract major pelagic species, and multi-hour runs offshore put you into blue water where the big fish are.

  • Species: Yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, sailfish, marlin, roosterfish, wahoo
  • Duration: Full day (8–10h)
  • Departs: Flamenco Marina (1.5–2h transit to grounds)
  • Best for: Experienced anglers, bucket-list trips
  • Season: Marlin Dec–Apr, tuna Jun–Oct, mahi-mahi Sep–Nov
  • Group size: 2–6 per boat

Bayano River — Tarpon

The Bayano River, about 1.5 hours east of Panama City, is the place for tarpon fishing. These powerful fish (catch and release) put up a serious fight. The river setting feels remote and wild — a true adventure fishing experience.

  • Species: Tarpon (catch & release), snook
  • Duration: Full day
  • Best for: Adventurous anglers
  • Season: Best Jan–Feb for tarpon
